Over the years, I have met amazing people and shared so many stories. I can introduce readers to new and expanding businesses in our area, shine a light on the work area agencies are doing, peer into the goings-on of local government and share personal stories from your neighbors.īeing able to serve the community I grew up in carries special meaning to me. The joy of working on a small paper is that I can continue to follow these stories and much more. To this day, I am committed to covering local crime trends, incidents and proposed solutions that matter to readers. I then transitioned to the cops and courts beat. I started my career with the Telegram on the education beat, and have won multiple awards for my coverage of local schools and universities. Sharing what's happening in the education scene, from the board room to the classroom, has been one of my passions since day one. I've been a resident of Superior for nearly 30 years, and it's where my children attended, and continue to attend, school. I grew up in rural Douglas County and graduated from Northwestern High School before earning a communications degree at the University of Wisconsin-Superior. My stories span a wide range of beats and I tend to bring my camera to every assignment, just in case. But it is up to you to take that step, to create your legacy.I have been covering news in Douglas County, Wisconsin, for more than two decades. “You have the opportunity to give others what has been given to you, all of the opportunities and kindness you have been shown. “Your actions will leave a lasting legacy to the people you have come in contact with throughout your life,” Olson said, from a small act of kindness to checking in on a friend. She thanked the teachers and staff who made students feel welcome in a terrifying time and made the school a better place. Without the support of teachers like orchestra director Amy Eichers, she said, “I don’t know if I would have made it here today.” “We went from barely doing anything to trying to do everything at once,” Olson said. When regular classes resumed their junior year, stress levels soared. No one had been through what we were going through, and our teachers did everything they could to keep us engaged in learning.” “I believe that all of our teachers during our sophomore year had an incredible impact on us. “This was a time when many of us struggled with motivation for anything and had no interest in going to school,” Olson said. Their sophomore year consisted of two days of in-person classes with only half their classmates. “Then we came back together and we were given a chance to re-meet each person we had grown up with and build new friendships you might not have imagined.” “Our class was robbed of any closure in our freshman year and many of our 15-year-old selves are waiting for that final goodbye to childhood,” Aker said. They shined a light on mental health and brought the school together for Unity Day. We took the fact that we began a new legacy in a fresh building and we ran.”Ĭlassmates built stepping stones for careers while printing event shirts for the Spartan Shack broadcasting school news for the Spartan Spin and crafting wood, plastic and metal goods through Spartan Manufacturing. “I know I’m not alone in saying that in front of me sits the world’s greatest innovators. The number 23 symbolizes the innovation, the change and the progress that we have endured,” Aker said. “The number 23 is not only held close to us because it’s our graduating year. |
